However, in recent years, Cebu has embraced a growing trend of incorporating sports and recreational activities into its lifestyle and tourism. Nowadays, it’s common to hear groups of friends inviting each other to run marathons or join various sports activities. With so much to enjoy in Cebu, sports tourism is certainly on the rise.
Among its many sporting events, one that has gained significant attention is the Ironman. Organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), the Ironman is a long-distance triathlon designed to test the endurance and strength of its participants. It consists of a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride, and a 42 km marathon run, all to be completed without breaks within approximately 17 hours. A shorter version, the Ironman 70.3—also known as the Half Ironman—covers 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling, and 21.1 km of running. Though it’s only half the distance of the full Ironman, it remains a formidable challenge.
Originally launched in Hawaii, the Ironman was first introduced to the Philippines in Camarines Sur, where it attracted 500 participants. Since relocating to Cebu in 2012, participation has grown to as many as 3,000 athletes. Over time, the event has earned a reputation for its challenging yet scenic course, attracting both professional athletes and those eager to push their limits.
Beyond the race, participants get the unique opportunity to explore the city while competing. In previous years, Ironman Cebu’s bike course has crossed CCLEX, one of the longest bridges in the Philippines, extending through Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova. Meanwhile, the run course follows a three-loop route along Punta Engaño Road, lined with hotels and resorts. Finally, the swim course takes place in the pristine waters of Mactan Newtown Beach, part of Megaworld Corporation’s Mactan Newtown, an emerging business district in Lapu-Lapu City.
Among the many past participants of Ironman 70.3 Cebu is Mhel Tuazon, a dedicated runner with 10 years of experience in endurance racing. Her passion for the sport led her to compete in Ironman twice. She first joined Cebu and later in the Ironman 70.3 Puerto Princesa under the relay category. Representing her company, 2GO, she took on the challenge as a runner in their triathlon club’s relay team.
“Joining the Ironman race is a dream. In 2023, our 2GO team formed a triathlon club, and I was invited to join under relay as a runner. To prepare, I followed a structured training plan, focusing on speed and endurance for my leg of the race. I also did heat training to adapt to the conditions and avoid getting overwhelmed during the actual event. On top of that, I prioritized proper nutrition, recovery, and mental preparation to stay strong throughout the race.”
Despite her preparation, Tuazon faced an unexpected challenge mid-run.
“At KM 10, I felt great, but after sipping Coke, my stomach started rumbling when I was 12 KM in. By KM 15, I had to stop and seek help from a local resident, an elderly woman who graciously let me use her restroom and even gave me warm water and medicine,” she recalled. “Her kindness reminded me how amazing the people of Cebu are. Basta Bisaya jud, matinabangon!”
Though the unexpected stop delayed her finish time, Tuazon remained focused and embraced the race experience.
“The atmosphere was absolutely incredible! The crowd support was electrifying, and the event was well-organized. Cebu’s stunning views made the race even more memorable, but what truly stood out was the kindness of the local community. They went out of their way to help, especially by pouring water on runners who were struggling with the heat.”
With determination, Tuazon powered through to the finish line, completing the race with a mix of relief, excitement, and pride.
“The experience, the challenge, and the camaraderie made every moment worth it.”
Now looking ahead, Tuazon is eager to return for Ironman Cebu 2025 to improve her performance, push her limits, and apply what she has learned from this year’s race.
