The tourism industry is gradually getting back up, welcoming both local and international tourists craving adventure and vacation. Filipinos, for one, are packing up their bags eager to catch the next flight and splurge on their travel.

This phenomenon is described as revenge travel where vacation-starved travelers are planning trips, going on vacations, visiting and exploring new places, or spending the weekends somewhere else with family and friends. This phenomenon apparently reflects a renewed demand for domestic and international travel with 87% of Filipinos surveyed expressing their eagerness to travel once again as revealed in a study by a travel and experiences platform, Klook. Consequently, the demand for international travel has also risen revealing that foreign destinations such as Japan, Thailand, and Singapore have already exceeded pre-pandemic levels followed by Hong Kong since it eased its quarantine protocols.

Klook also revealed that bookings for local destinations are already 87% higher in 2022 than in 2019 for domestic travel. Among the most popular travel destinations in the Philippines are Boracay, Manila, Tagaytay, Cebu, Clark, and Subic.

As revenge travel is seen as a lingering phenomenon, it is expected that the tourism sector will immensely contribute to the growth of the national economy in the long run. National authorities and major players in the tourism sector anticipate an increasing percentage of travelers coming in and out of the country urging them to plan and implement initiatives of improving infrastructure developments and travel services to boost the sector.

The tourism sector is blossoming and travelers are clearly unstoppable of taking trips and spending lavishly for a vacation to make up for the last three years of being stuck in one place. As such a phenomenon boosts our economy, the impacts also ripple on its people and its community.
